Clearing Places on Computer Science Degrees at
Queen Mary, University of London, for 2005 entry

LATEST NEWS 22nd August 2005: CLEARING PLACES STILL AVAILABLE

For all applicants for 2005 entry, and those considering applying, please note, term starts on 21st September.

We still have some places on our degree programmes which we can allocate to applicants through the UCAS Clearing system. If you did not get a place on your UCAS Firm or Insurance choice degree and are still looking for an alternative, please contact us on 020 7882 5216 if you are interested in one of our degrees. Details of the degree programmes we run can be found here.

We may be able to consider you if you are not already in the UCAS system but are interested in applying for entrance this year. See here for detailed information on UCAS. If you apply now, you will be put directly into the Clearing system. We are happy to advise you before you apply on whether you are sufficiently qualified to obtain a place. Contact us on 020 7882 5216 for further information.

General advice on the sort of qualifications we value for our degree programmes can be found here. For Clearing places, we are particularly interested in hearing from enquirers who have at least grade C in A-level Mathematics. However, we are also interested in hearing from any other enquirer who has good all-round A-levels, at least 240 UCAS points, and some indication of the good logical and reasoning skills required in Computer Science. Our minimum maths requirement is a B in GCSE Mathematics. You don't need to be a "computer whizz-kid" to apply. In fact, an interest in puzzles and problem-solving is probably a better indication of real aptitude for our subject than superficial knowledge of the latest computer jargon or fascination with computer gadgetry. We can make some concessions to mature applicants who have relevant work experience, but due to the nature of our degree we will require some formal qualifications indicating academic aptitude. Although the main qualification for university entrance is the A-level, we can advise on the suitability of other UK qualifications and we can accept overseas qualifications which are agreed by UCAS to be of equivalent standard to A-levels.

If you have already contacted us and been offered a place in Clearing, we will be holding the place open for you until you receive your Clearing Entry Form. The Clearing Entry Form is sent to you automatically by UCAS if you do not get a place in your Firm or Insurance UCAS choice. If you wish to take up the offer, you must get the actual Clearing Entry Form (not a copy) to us. You can post it to:
The Admissions Tutor
Department of Computer Science
Queen Mary, University of London
Mile End Road
London E1 4NS
If you live in or around London, however, you might like to bring your Clearing Entry Form personally to the Computer Science Department Office. See the map. We are in the building numbered 25 on this map at the western end of the campus. If you look across the square from the westernmost entrance to Queen Mary on the Mile End Road (the entrance nearest Stepney Green tube station) you will see a covered staircase on the outside of the building opposite you. This staircase leads to the Computer Science department office.

If you have already made us your Firm or Insurance choice, you should have heard from us by now whether we have confirmed your place. If you are still waiting to hear, please contact us. The only reason a decision would not have been made by now is that we are still waiting for details of your qualifications, so you may need to contact your school or college to see if there has been any delay in passing on your results.

In common with other universities we are committed to making fair use of the UCAS system. This means your Firm and Insurance choice must be regarded as a commitment which cannot be broken unless exceptional circumstances have arisen since you made that commitment. Therefore, we will not be encouraging applicants who have been accepted through a Firm or Insurance choice at other universities to break that commitment and come to us in Clearing. If you wish to be released from a commitment you have with us in order to enter Clearing, you will need to meet one of the conditions for release given in the UCAS Admissions Guide.

You can find general advice on admission to our degrees here.
